Bargaining Communique May 29, 2025
CUPE 5430 members,
Your bargaining committee met with SAHO for three days this week. Although we were optimistic after the last bargaining dates, the employer continues to hold firm to their proposals that would weaken our collective agreement.
For example, in April, we presented a comprehensive proposal to settle Article 27 – Hours of Work with a focus on improving scheduling and relief language. This week the employer responded by disregarding our proposals and maintaining their position from previous sessions.
Despite our efforts, the employer continues to push concessions that threaten your rights and working conditions. The employer is focused on addressing their worker shortage through proposals that would allow them to implement split shifts, move you from community to community, classification to classification, and increase the requirement to be on-call for almost nine months of the year.
On May 5, a meeting was held with the SHA, SAHO, and affiliates as well as the health provider unions to begin discussions on essential services. It is evident that this will not be a quick process, but we will continue this work so that we are prepared.
We need to continue to pressure the government – together.
In the coming weeks, members of the bargaining committee will be visiting every facility across the province to share information on bargaining, essential services, and discuss next steps. We will also answer questions, gather feedback, and update contact information.
In solidarity,
Your Bargaining Committee: Bashir Jalloh (President), Linda Renkas (Vice-President), Nancy Black (Recording Secretary), Rhonda Osipoff (Treasurer), Linda Vancuren (R1), Sharon Paul (R2), Helen Head (R3), Arlene Picard (R4), Corinne Sopel (R5), Janice Janzen (staff), Justin Mercier (staff), Craig Thebaud (staff)
