Bargaining Updates

CUPE urges SAHO to reconsider their regressive package of concessions

 Dear CUPE Health Care Member:

Your CUPE Bargaining Committee resumed collective bargaining with SAHO June 13-14, 2017.

Once again, CUPE strongly urged SAHO to reconsider the sweeping list of concessions they have tabled in this round of bargaining. Your Bargaining Committee told the employer that SAHO’s package is not respectful of our members and that it would take us backwards, not forward.

At the previous bargaining session, CUPE questioned why SAHO was putting forward these takeaways and asked how these proposals would impact employee morale, recruitment, and retention efforts. We are still waiting for the answers to these questions. SAHO indicated that they will only answer questions concerning their monetary concessions and what they see as “common” proposals at the common table with all three provider unions present.

On a positive note, CUPE and SAHO have agreed to amend the collective agreement’s discrimination clause to include gender identity/expression. Otherwise, limited progress has been made. To date, the parties have agreed to two other minor amendments and to renew or amend nine Letters of Understanding.

Discussion was held with SAHO on several CUPE proposals, including standby, call back (including electronic call back), posting working schedules, reimbursement for medical notes, and vacation scheduling and cancellation. Your Bargaining Committee pointed out that many of our proposals are motivated by the principle of fairness, since we are only seeking contract provisions that exist in other Saskatchewan health care collective agreements.

Lastly, SAHO confirmed bargaining dates beyond June 30, 2017 that were previously put forward by the Provider Coalition. Our next bargaining dates are set for July 4-6 in Saskatoon and July 25-27 in Regina. Our Coalition partners SEIU-West and SGEU will also resume negotiations with their respective SAHO bargaining committees at that time.

We want to thank the membership for showing your continued support for the bargaining committee by wearing CUPE stickers during collective bargaining dates with SAHO. Keep up the pressure on your MLAs. Click here for a list of MLA contact information:  List of SK MLAs

Your CUPE Health Care Council Bargaining Committee
